Sending, receiving, storing, and managing e-mails. That sounds pretty apparent. But I’m including it right here anyway, just to realize settlement with my readers on the boundaries here. Scheduling conferences and occasions. More on that later, but when you work in a workplace that runs Microsoft Exchange Server, Outlook is about all you need to guarantee that assembly announcements get to the proper folks. Again, to be per my ongoing tradition, what is Outlook not good for?

Outlook sucks as an undertaking management tool. I can remember one very particular job I had a few years ago as a programmer. My Project Manager would use Outlook to assign tasks to folks. Sounds good on the floor, however the truth was, Dave had nowhere he could look to see the big picture; how what I used to be doing was associated to Brad, or Steve, or Frank.

That was the hugest drawback. Not to mention, if we needed to bill a shopper for providers, there actually wasn’t any approach to create significant invoices. In reply to your next question, Microsoft Project. The outlook is mediocre as a mail merge data source. I’ve found, after multiple trials and errors, that when I’ve my contacts saved in Outlook, and I try to use that contact database as a data supply in Word, then I haven’t got access to all of the contact fields.

Port it into Excel, and all is well. For my cash, though, I’d most likely select Access. The outlook is … Read the rest

Don’t Worry, I’m An Economist!

In Quadrant I we have countries with high debts but resilient to a run. In the next quadrant, we’ve countries with high debts and a high risk of a run (the worse combination). The third quadrant features countries with low personal debt and resilience to a run (the best mixture), within the fourth are countries with low debts but susceptible to a run. Both measures found in designing the buyer base index are the demand-side risk indication (on the horizontal axis), and the supply-side risk sign (on the vertical axis).

The results are especially interesting when observing them on a country by country basis, as is done in the graph. It tells us of the high riskiness of peripheral eurozone economies (rightfully including Belgium, but also France and Austria), and a stressing situation in the world’s biggest economies of Japan, Germany, US, and UK. Despite the fact that the later countries don’t suffer directly from the risk of default, their high debt-to-GDP ratio makes them potentially risky, at least from the supply perspective. However, our thinking about that the strategy of acquiring this data was to give low scores to countries whose personal debt is own mostly by domestic traders (as is the case with Japan, UK, and USA).

What this essentially indicates is that countries still left of the vertical axis shouldn’t be concerned about the sustainability of their debt given that they have a lesser risk exposure than their counterparts on the right of the axis. Because the … Read the rest

CEO Overconfidence And Corporate Investment

CEO Overconfidence And Corporate Investment

In the middle and right columns of Table I, we show firm and CEO overview statistics for subsamples of firm‐years dependant on overconfidence sample restrictions and assessed overconfidence. For brevity, we only use Holder 67 in these comparisons. Remember that of the 113 CEOs who meet the selection criterion, 58 display overconfidence in their personal collection decisions.

By assessment, 85 of 661 CEOs are overconfident using the Longholder measure and 97 of 158 using Net Buyer. Thus, the measure ensuring the largest sample size, Longholder, is also the most conventional way of measuring overconfidence. There are no significant differences in observable firm or CEO characteristics across the overconfident and control samples. In particular, the distribution of firms across the Fama-French industry groups is virtually identical in the overall sample, the subsample satisfying the choice criterion, and the overconfident subsample.

Thus, our overconfidence measure shows up orthogonal to strong characteristics, at least as assessed at the industry level. In Table II, we present the pairwise correlations among the three overconfidence actions and CEO and strong characteristics. We consider the overconfidence measures two at a time due to distinctions in the subsamples which we apply them. Of particular interest will be the relations among stock ownership, vested options, and our overconfidence actions. Mechanistically, an overconfident CEO who delays option exercise or purchases additional company stock increase his holdings. However, other factors such as firm size, firm age, corporate governance, and tenure, are substantially more important in determining the level of ownership.
